From the recording Being Well
“Could It Be?” questions whether there is even an autonomous self to make happy. It weaves together ancient Indian and East Asian ideas: we are different iterations of the same underlying reality (Upanishads), that reality is ultimately ungraspable (Daoism), and we are empty of independent essence (“could it be so empty”—Buddhism’s doctrine of emptiness/śūnyatā). Liberation arises through detachment and letting go. Embracing radical interconnectedness also points toward Robin Wall Kimmerer’s idea of mutual flourishing.
Lyrics
Could it be, could it be
We’re one and the same thing
Lead, follow and lead
Friends and enemies
I’ve always thought, I’m something I’m not
From a seed, to a tree
Letting go of leaves
See the clouds and the sea
Are one and the same thing
I’ve always known, I’m not alone
Completely incomplete
The way it has to be
Tell me everything
Could it be so empty?
Could it be?
You and I, are going to die
I know I shouldn’t mind
Cause nothing’s really mine
One and the same mind
Could it be so empty?
Could it be?
